The mammalian retina is a valuable model system to study
neuronal biology in health and disease. To obtain insight into intrinsic
processes of the retina, great efforts are currently directed towards the
identification and characterization of transcripts with functional relevance to
this tissue.
With the goal to assemble a genome-wide reference transcriptome of the mammalian retina, referred to as the retinome, annotated genes experimentally shown to be expressed in the retina/the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) are extracted from published sources and made available in a non-redundant collection of retinal gene transcripts in RetinaCentral. RetinaCentral offers a platform for rapid access to bioinformatic and functional information on transcripts of the retinome. This database is intended as a first step in the delineation of the gene and protein networks governing retinal physiology. |
